The Sharp Tv series, as jokingly wholesome a picture of the Napoleonic wars as it is, I consider much more accurate historical representation of the period.
Yeah. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott's work has been trending in the frustrating direction. As movies, a lot of them were great, at least up through Robin Hood. As history, however, they've been increasingly lacking since Blackhawk Down.
It seemed folly to try to make his entire life into a singular movie in the first place, and the trailers showed far too much of his romantic side to be intriguing to me. The only scene ive watched is Austerlitz and it was a glum, over-dramtic scene that i couldn’t buy into
Well, it's really not about his entire life: Just from the end of the French Revolution to his final exile on St. Helena. But yeah, there's far too much focus on his romantic dalliances and too little focus on his actual victories and achievements. My takeaway is that David Scarpa is a dodo and should never be allowed to write another historical screenplay.
Is he the one responsible for so many of RS's recent screenplays? It would explain a lot. I saw a video last night that posited the theory Ridley Scott movies are only as good as the screenplay which is something he has llittle to do with.
This is something I've actually been thinking about since watching Gladiator II a couple of weeks ago. I like most Ridley Scott films, but it's a definite fact that the movies with the most lackluster screenplays are his worst.

I was really disappointed by this film. I felt as if every scene was essentially a tableau vivant of every famous oil painting with Napoleon in it.
Thankyou for saving me four hours !
Is Gladiator two worth it at all?
I actually think Napoleon is BETTER than Gladiator II.

You could make a 2-hour movie about one day in Napoleon's life.
