I really like this. A short story packed with a cool, action-y punch. Good work.

Thanks, man, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm hoping to revisit this character at some point.

Is he basically a paladin?

Yeah, that's more or less the archetype I based him off of.

Coolio. I have a paladin-like character I've done some things with, but haven't published anything yet. If we're talking dnd-esque archetypes I like playing a lot with the ranger one.

Same here. The ranger is my favorite fantasy archetype. In fact, the first fantasy story that I wrote and published here on Substack is about my ranger character from the Chivalry & Sorcery games (D&D alternative tabletop system) that my friends and I played back in high school.

I'm definitely going to want to read this. I played a dark elf character named Mirius Morda for a one-shot a couple of years ago, and he got killed. I was so devastated, but I loved him so much that I made him a sidekick character for my book that's coming out in the next few weeks. He's gone but not forgotten. And he also makes repeated cameos in my DND games whenever I DM.

Very atmospheric and mountainous! I can see why you were reminded of this story, Josh.
